Wheel hub bearings can fail 3 different ways.
They can wear out and become loose. This is a mechanic failure.
Check by lifting vehicle in the air and grabbing top and bottom of the wheel move inward and outward if it moves bearing has failed.
They can wear out and make noise. This is a mechanical failure as well.
If the wheel bearings fail this way you will here a rubbing noise only when the vehicle is moving forward and usually at lower speeds at first. The rubbing or growling noise will seem to increase with speed. If they are really bad it will increase to a higher pitch growl and the noise will seem to match the increase of speed.
The wheel bearings can wear out and cause your anti lock brake and or Traction control lights to turn on. This is an electrical failure.
If the wiring, connector, seals or coil inside the bearing hub assembly fails it will turn on the anti lock light or ABS light. If the your vehicle has Traction Control it will also turn this light on too. The traction control computer or module use the ABS system to function.
How much does it cost to replace a front or rear wheel bearing hub assembly?
Usually # 40,000 for passenger vehicles and #55,000-#80,000 for light trucks and SUV’S. Larger trucks can cost as much as #150,0000.
Make sure whomever is replacing your bearings knows how to tell if it is a front or a rear bearing and if it is a left side or a right side. It’s very easy to get it wrong and end up replacing the wrong one which means you end up paying for both!
