Neighbours of Ismaila Yerima, an Intelligence Officer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) killed by suspected gunmen on Sunday, have given account of how the man and his entire household were savagely murdered.
Unknown gunmen had struck at Hotoro area of Kano municipality, killing him, his wife, his four-year- old child and his physically challenged younger brother.
Yerima's neighbours described him as a very smart officer who the assailants must have been mistaken for a State Security Service (SSS) operative as he always appeared neat and was popular among the youths in the area.
Another neighbour, Muhammad Abdu, told our correspondent in Kano that the two gunmen stormed the area around 12 noon and forced themselves into the residence of the late security officer before cruelly wiping out everyone in the house.
"They forcefully secured entrance into the building and opened fire on those found inside, including children and the wife of the deceased", Abdu said.
Abdu also said that the sporadic gunshots suddenly triggered pandemonium around the vicinity and that the assailants escaped in the ensuing confusion, while immediate neighbours locked up their gates and remained indoors until the arrival of security agents to the area.
"When the time security officers arrived at the scene of the incident, the victims of the attack were found dead in a pool of their own blood", Abdu said.
He told LEADERSHIP that when the corpses of the deceased persons were released from the Murtala Muhammad Hospital for burial, Alhaji Habibu Gwarzo, an elder statesman and a former teacher, burst into tears, as he beheld the battered bodies of the slain security officer and his family members.
According to Abdu, "the head of the four-year-old girl was shattered by bullets of the gunmen and her body was riddled with bullets."
An elderly woman, who identified herself as an in-law to the late security officer, but did not want to be named, said that she was shocked when she learnt that Ismail was eliminated along with his wife.
While the incident lasted, a military helicopter was seen hovering round the city in a futile attempt to track the assailant.
"He was good and his wife was good too. They were perfect combination but some greedy people have eliminated them senselessly. Only God will console members of their families," she said
