Commercial Sex workers sentence to two months imprisonment for stealing Mobile phones

Rita Joseph, an 18-year-old commercial sex worker was on Monday sentenced to two months’ imprisonment by an Upper Area Court in Jos for stealing two mobile phones valued at N16,500. The court, however, gave the convict an option of N1,000 fine.
The trial Judge, Mustapha Hassan, said that the prosecution had convinced the court beyond reasonable doubt that the convict committed the offence.
He said that the confessional statement made by the convict assisted the court to arrive at its decision.
He warned her to be of good character after her jail term and advised her to shun prostitution and stealing.
The police prosecutor, Abbare said Rita Joseph had stolen the two handsets from the bedroom of her client, Anayo Oroh, and run away.
“The convict was on October 4, arrested at a beer parlour at West of Mines after disappearing with the handsets for two days and was handed over to the police.
“During police investigation on the matter, the convict confessed to have committed the offence,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.
The convict, who had pleaded guilty to the charge, prayed the court for leniency.
She said the complainant’s refusal to pay the N8,000 fees which they had agreed to before she rendered her services, made her take his phones.
“My lord, the complainant had several rounds of sex with me before day break and in the morning refused to settle me and this made me snatch his phones,” she said.
What’s your take on this?
