Eaglets beat Botswana 3-0 in Calabar

The Golden Eaglets on Saturday defeated the Diamond Zebras of Botswana 3-0 in a friendly game played at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The game was used to test the readiness of the two teams ahead of the 2013 African U-17 tournament in Morocco in April.
Striker Taiwo Awoniyi marked his debut for the national U-17 team with a brace. He opened score with a superb goal after finishing off from a Bernard Bulbwa’s pull-out in the 16th minute.
Hardworking midfielder, Ifeanyi Matthew, scored the second goal just over half an hour from a brilliant free-kick that left goalkeeper Daniel Kedidimetse rooted to the spot.
Six minutes later, Awoniyi, the former U-15 striker, completed his brace of the evening, when he rose highest to head home a pin-point pull-out from Musa Yahaya for the Eaglets’ third goal of the match.
Botswana coach, Kagiso Kobedi, said both teams gave a good account of themselves despite the score line, adding that the second game of the two-match series on Monday would be very interesting.
Before the match, the Nigerian players unfurled a big banner with the message: ‘Welcome Back, Governor Liyel Imoke…Golden Eaglets’ Foremost Supporter.’
The Cross River State governor just returned to the state after almost three months on vacation overseas.
