Turning 65 might be a time of celebration and indulgence, but Hilary Clinton did not use her birthday as an excuse to stray from her strict diet.
As Hillary celebrated the occasion with Bill, Chelsea and her husband Marc, the family devoured a vegan, gluten-free cake at the lavish Mayflower Inn in Washington, Connecticut.
But despite cutting back on calories, the Clintons did not cut back on luxury at the glamorous Inn and Spa.
With suites costing up to $1,850 per night, the Mayflower is one of the most prestigious five-star spas in America.
Fellow guests saw the Clintons walking around the grounds, playing cards and reading, in-between getting pampered and chatting to visitors, according to the NY Post.
One lucky newlywed couple managed to chat to Hillary and Bill during their visit, who took photos with the bride and groom.
The former president, who had a quadruple bypass in 2004, adopted a vegan diet after his coronary stent surgery in 2010.
Since giving up meat and diary, Bill Clinton lost 24lbs, and told Ellen DeGeneres in May: ‘It’s just a good thing to do, and puts so much less stress on your cardiovascular system.’
Although Hillary has not said if she follows her husband’s veganism, she clearly supports his cause and wanted him to join in on her birthday celebrations.
She told Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show last year that it works for him.
‘And he, I have to say, Savannah, he has rarely gotten so much reaction since he left the White House as when he talked about it because he basically said, "Look, I mean, some people are more vulnerable to heart problems than other people", and so he reversed his diet, but he felt like he needed to go even further, and he thinks it’s working for him.’
Meanwhile, Chelsea also follows in her father’s footsteps and featured a vegan menu and gluten-free cake at her New York wedding to Marc Mezvinsky in 2010.
After the U.S. Secretary-of-State finished celebrating her birthday over the weekend, she was back to business in Algeria on Monday, pressing for military intervention in Mali.
She is discussing the growing threat by militant Islamists in the West African nation.
